Happy New Year, Everyone!

We will kick off 2017 with one of our most popular meetings.  Residential real estate attorney Jeff Taylor of Klinger, Robinson and Ford, will speak to our group on Thursday the 12th.  Jeff will be covering both the basics and the finer points of the eviction process, including proper service of notices.  Have you ever gotten all the way to court only to lose your case because you jumped the gun by a day or too and filed too early?  Or maybe your process server did not get service completed soon enough before your court date. As we all know, lots of details need to come together for a successful eviction.  Brush up on your knowledge before it’s time for your next adventure in the court room.

We will meet at noon, Thursday the 12th at the Longbranch.  The lunch buffet for our group will be ready after 11:30.  As always, we need to give the Longbranch an accurate count on Monday for both the room set up and the food.  Please respond by Sunday night using the following link:

Our Board of Directors meets once a month to manage our membership, treasury, set policies, participate in local, state and federal housing issues, and plan our programs.  Our officers are elected once a year at our January Board meeting.  Congratulations to the following who were elected last month to serve on our 2017 Board of Directors:

Therie Cutchlow:  Therie’s occupation is Income Tax Preparation, as well as being a landlord with two rental houses that she owns and manages. She became an active landlord nine years ago, and has been a Landlords of Linn County member since 2007. She currently serves on our Vendor and Outreach Committees.  She is a native of Cedar Rapids, and an avid supporter of realistic change and measurable progress for our city. 
Ed Faber: Owner/Agent of Insurance Gurus, an independent insurance agency. He manages one rental property.  Ed has been a Vendor member for four years and joined our Board in 2015, serving on the Website and Membership Committees. He and his wife Carol have raised two children in Cedar Rapids. Ed is an officer in the Knights of Columbus, president of the Fairfax Lions Club, and also active in the Catholic Laymen’s Club, Cedar Rapids CEO, and Corridor Business Networking Group. He enjoys cooking, handy work and volunteering at church. Kim Frederickson:  Manager, Pheasant Run Apartments, 231 units. Kim has been managing rental property since 1991, formerly at Gateway Gardens, and a member of LLC since 1991.  She has been on our Board since 2006 and has also served on the Landlords of Iowa Board of Directors since 2007.  She is Board Secretary for both LLC and LLIA. When not working Kim enjoys going to the movies and traveling.Garry Grimm:  Garry has been a landlord since 1979, and currently owns 21 single family homes. He has been a member of LLC since 1995, on our Board since 2001, and is currently our Vice President and our Program Chair. He also serves on the C.R. Housing Appeals Board, and is a long term member of the Wellington Heights and Mound View neighborhood associations.Kathy Hall:  Kathy is a retired realtor and has been a landlord for 25 years.  She owns and manages six rentals, and has been an LLC member for about two years.  Kathy has also served on the Board of Directors for the Cedar Rapids Area Association of Realtors, the Catherine McCauley Center, and Linnhaven.  She loves to travel, and currently is a volunteer at the Catherine McCauley Center.  This will be Kathy’s first year as a candidate for our Board.Barb Kintzle:  Barb is the Property Manager at Continental Terrace Apartments, 144 units.  She has been managing rental property for eleven years, and a member of Landlords of Linn County for nine years.  Barb has been on our Board for the past six years, has served as our Treasurer, and is currently Chair of our Community Outreach Committee and on Membership Committee.  Barb is also President of the Treeline Homeowners Association and volunteers as an ESL tutor for the Catherine McCauley Center.

Linda Miller:  Linda is retired from Rockwell Collins and owns two 4-plexes in Marion.  She has been a landlord since 2006, and has been a member of Landlords of Linn County since 2008, and also serves on the Landlords of Iowa Board of Directors.  Linda has been a Landlords of Linn County Board member for five years, serving on our Vendor, Membership and Community Outreach Committees.  Linda was previously on the GLBT Board at Rockwell Collins.  She works part time for a greenhouse and landscaping company, and is a member of the Eastern Iowa Bonsai Association, and a 2017 Master Gardener intern. 

Bob Mitchell:  After a 42 year career in the computer industry, Bob is now a full time landlord, with eight rental houses.  He has been a landlord since 1999 and a member of LLC since 2004.  Bob is our Legislative Chair and on our website committee, 2011 Landlords of Iowa Convention Chair, and also serves on the Landlords of Iowa Board of Directors. 

Laura O’Leary:  Laura retired in 2015 from thirty years in full time property management. She and her husband Joe own three rental condos and a commercial property.  Laura has been managing rental property since 1986, and a member of LLC since 1988.  She has served on the Landlords of Iowa Board of Directors, and is currently President of LLC.  Laura is a Commissioner on the Cedar Rapids Civil Rights Commission, volunteers at the MCO Food Pantry, and is an ESL tutor at the Catherine McCauley Center.  

Dick Rehman:  Dick is a retired real estate investor and was a charter member of Landlords of Linn County when it first formed as Metropolitan Housing Association in 1978.  Dick currently owns 32 units.  He is currently serving as Treasurer and is on our Website and Legislative Committees. He is a past President of Landlords of Linn County, and Landlords of Iowa.  He has served on the Cedar Rapids Affordable Housing Commission and the Continuum of Care Council.  His other great interest is traveling. 

Joyce Steffen:  Joyce has owned or managed property since 1978, and was the Property Manager for a local real estate company for 16 years.  She started her own real estate company in 1999, and managed property for other owners for another 12 years.  She currently owns and manages 15 rental units.  Joyce has been a LLC member for well over 30 years, currently serving on the Vendor and Program Committees.
