April Meeting

April is nationwide Fair Housing Month.  LaSheila Yates, Executive Director of the Cedar Rapids Civil Rights Commission and City Chief Diversity Officer, and Bernie Walther, CRCRC Investigator, will speak to our group on Thursday evening, April 13th. Do you know and understand what all the protected classes are in Iowa and in Cedar Rapids?  Is it OK to turn down an applicant if they have a face full of piercings and offensive tattoos?  What about smokers, or a companion animal that happens to be a pot bellied pig?  Do you know what happens if one of your renters files a discrimination complaint against you?  Marion property owners, are you familiar with the additional protected class in your city?

LaSheila and Bernie will also explain some recent findings in area housing complaint cases that have been completed, and also provide us with details regarding the upcoming Fair Housing training on April 28, “Disability, Dogs and Doors”.

Join us on April 13th at The Longbranch.  Social starts at 6:00 PM, with the program beginning at 7:00.  The delicious buffet for our group will be ready around 6:30.  It is necessary to let us know you are coming, for food prep and room set-up.  Please respond using the link below, no later than this Sunday, April 9th.

Also, every two years HUD does a review of  the Cedar Rapids Civil Rights Commission, which includes evaluating public comments regarding their performance.  We have been asked to send our comments to [email protected]  by April 20th.

Don’t miss our April meeting.  Register today!
